Joaquim Tenreiro, Brazil, 1961
Dining table in ebonzied imbuia with black under-painted glass top. Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro, Brazil, c.1961.
...
While Tenreiro created tables in various sizes and materials, his large-scale pieces in wood and glass feature some of his most ingenious design solutions. Utilizing architectonic principles for structure, Tenreiro made feet that work the same way as the pillars of a building with an overhanging slab. Because the support is not placed along the edges, the table can be long and free for seating all around. Tenreiro often placed underpainted glass on tabletops, which serves multiple functions. To start, warm plates or cold beverages can be placed without damaging the wood. Additionally, they allow the use of color and bring variety to the material textures. -

Bar with Two Barstools
...
Wood, laminate, and wrought iron
In addition to his mastery of hardwoods, Tenreiro also experimented with other materials, as in this bar with a Formica top (which began to be produced in Brazil in 1950), that he paired with wrought iron stools. These pieces were one-offs made for private commissions for the carioca population, as the people from Rio are called. -

Made by Forma
Wood, cane, and glass.
Martin Eisler designed this exquisite dining table for Forma in the 1950s. His inspirations for the piece reflect how the architect and designer managed to merge European and Brazilian references to create something unique. The sleek wood structure reflects both a mastery of craftsmanship and international design trends. At the same time, the cane top was inspired by vernacular cane ceiling linings seen in Latin-American rural architecture. -

Parker Dining Table and Set of Ten (10) Menna Chairs
...
Solid pine, brass, and cane
The Parker dining suite commission was designed in 1978 by Sergio Rodrigues for the Parker family in Rio de Janeiro. The meticulous construction in woodworking is demonstrated to a substantial degree in the complex interlocking elements that comprise the underside support of the table. Rodrigues’s thoughtful attention to detail in the design additionally shows how the beauty of the object can be seen not only in the construction, material, and finish but also in its effect as a compelling focal point of everyday life. Tellingly, the Parker commission remained one of Rodrigues’s favorite designs throughout his prolific career.

Sergio Rodrigues, the youngest of the designers highlighted here, melded together rationalist principles with large doses of humor and craft. He understood geometry like few others and was often ahead of his time.
