Lina Bo Bardi, Brazil, 1987
Prototype of the "Frei Egídio" chair in Tauari wood. Designed by Lina Bo Bardi, Marcelo Ferraz and Marcelo Suzuki, Brazil, 1987.
...
Lina Bo Bardi used to say that she did not design furniture for its own sake, but made exceptions when the piece would help to complete a project. The Frei Egidio chair was designed with Marcelo Ferraz and Marcelo Suzuki for a theater in Bahia, inspired by an Italian Renaissance folding chair they used when working at Bo Bardi's Glass House. In the theater setting, this shape allowed viewers to place their chairs anywhere they wanted or as the play demanded. -

Dining table in caviona wood with cane and glass top. First produced in Argentina, then Brazil, by Forma.
...
Martin Eisler designed this exquisite dining table for Forma in the 1950s. His inspirations for the piece reflect how the architect and designer managed to merge European and Brazilian references to create something unique. The sleek wood structure reflects both a mastery of craftsmanship and international design trends. At the same time, the cane top was inspired by vernacular cane ceiling linings seen in Latin-American rural architecture. -

Philip Johnson and Richard Kelly
The designer Richard Kelly is best known for his architectural lighting in masterpieces such as Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building (1958) and Louis Kahn’s Yale Center for British Art (1974). Long before that, Kelly had exhibited low-cost lamps of his own design at MoMA in the early 1940s and teamed up with architect and MoMA curator Philip Johnson to design this lamp in 1950, initially as a three-legged model for Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan. Unfortunately, the design was unwieldy, and the lamp kept tipping over. Only a handful of the three-legged version were made for various Johnson residences, and in 1954 Johnson and Kelly added a fourth leg, which stabilized the design. The floor lamp then became a commercial success for the New York lighting factory Edison Price.
...
In 1958, Johnson gifted an example to his own institution in time for it to be included in MoMA’s first major survey and publication of its permanent collection. Another example is in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Greta Magnusson Grossman, USA, 1947
In 1948, Greta Magnusson Grossman stated that to create furniture that could blend all periods. Her solution was not to mix different styles but to develop a unique look. Such is the case with this very rare armchair that Grossman designed for Barker Brothers in 1947, the year they opened Modern Shop. The armchair does combine the typical Scandinavian arm “swoop” with the ease of the California coast, but it is conceived as a new and innovative design. The piece was part of the Multi-Unit Pacific Line, created by Grossman for Barker in Ash wood with a “Palomino” stain finish, which gives the wood a golden sheen.

"Vronka" lounge chair with jacaranda frame and upholstered leather seat and headrest. Designed by Sérgio Rodrigues, Brazil, 1962.
...
Shortly after starting the architecture program at the University of Brazil (now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), Sergio Rodrigues found a passion for interior design. After graduating, he began designing his own furniture, and by the 1960s, had a thriving business. The Vronka armchair was designed in 1962 for his Meia Pataca line, which Rodrigues created aiming for a broader client base. While admirable, his architecture remains overshadowed by his prolific furniture design career. -

James Harvey Crate
If one could crown a winner of “the most famous design exhibited at MoMA by an otherwise completely obscure designer,” it might very well be James Harvey Crate. His T-C-3 lamp received Third Prize in MoMA’s Low-Cost Lighting Competition of 1951 and was shown in the New Lamps exhibition at the museum between March and June of that year. Crate was a 25-year-old designer at General Motors when he beat out hundreds of other entries for one of the prizes—the only significant recognition he would receive in his career. Crate’s one-hit wonder is a design icon of the Atomic Age. As MoMA’s curators wrote at the time, “the main feature of this lamp is the hyperbolic funnel” in aluminum, which projects the light outward towards the reflector disc, and can be adjusted using the three steel legs with cork ball feet. The resulting shadows that project against any white wall capture MoMA’s stated aim of bringing modern art into one’s life.
...
The T-C-3 lamp was produced in extremely limited quantities by the Heifetz Company in New York. Examples are in the collection of Brooklyn Museum and Cooper Hewitt.
