Murrine–Murano–Marquis

Opening January 22

82 Franklin Street

In 1969, a young American glass artist stepped onto the factory floor of Venini in Murano, Italy—an unprecedented moment in the history of Venetian glass. That artist was Richard Marquis, and the encounter would reshape the future of American Studio Glass. R & Company is pleased to present Murrine–Murano–Marquis, in collaboration with the Italian glass specialists Jim Oliveira and Sara Blumberg of Glass Past. The exhibition places Marquis’s murrine objects in dialogue with masterworks from turn-of-the-century and modern Venetian workshops, including Venini, Fratelli Toso, and Salviati, and situates their dedication to murrine within a broader historical context. Together, the selection of rare historical works in dialogue with Marquis’s unique output showcases the pinnacle of technical prowess and creative expression achieved through the complex and enchanting technique of murrine.
