While Tenreiro created tables in various sizes and materials, his large-scale pieces in wood and glass feature some of his most ingenious design solutions. Utilizing architectonic principles for structure, Tenreiro made feet that work the same way as the pillars of a building with an overhanging slab. Because the support is not placed along the edges, the table can be long and free for seating all around. Tenreiro often placed underpainted glass on tabletops, which serves multiple functions. To start, warm plates or cold beverages can be placed without damaging the wood. Additionally, they allow the use of color and bring variety to the material textures. -

A feat of craftsmanship, Joaquim Tenreiro's three-legged chair bears the hallmarks of his modernist approach to form and strict material principles. The model was constructed in variants with two, three, four, and five different kinds of wood, which required a deep knowledge of craftsmanship and intimacy with the way different species behave
under varying environmental and technical circumstances. What differentiates Tenreiro from many of his contemporaries is that he was both a designer and a master craftsman. Because he was a designer, Tenreiro understood the history of the field. The shape of this chair references an art deco slipper chair, while the vertical lines going upward evoke such movement that one even thinks of streamlining. At the same time, the carving of the chair creates perfect ergonomics while also pushing materials to their limits, something only a true maker could achieve. -

Pair of side tables in ebonized wood. Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro for a private commission in Copacabana, Brazil, circa 1950. Dimensions are for a single table.
...
Made for the interior of a Rio de Janeiro apartment, these side tables were part of a commissioned interior by Tenreiro, where bespoke designs furnished every room. The quality of the tables lies in their simplicity: originally, they framed a large sofa against a colored glass partition, but on their own, they can be arranged in varied configurations and work as functional sculptures. A single surface acts as foot and top, almost mimicking the gesture of a brushstroke. A remarkable characteristic ofTenreiro's practice that is often overlooked is his mastery of various materials and techniques, showcased here by an experiment in bent wood. -
