Sultan in the Studio: Sergio Rodriques

30 September - 17 November 2004

82 Franklin St NY 10013

This exhibition, the first major American retrospective of Rodrigues’ work, is designed by Diana Agrest and Mario Gandelsonas of Agrest and Gandelsonas Architects and co-organized by Brazilian-born journalist Nessia Pope. More than two dozen of the designer’s most influential objects, as well as photographs, drawings, and other ephemera documenting Rodrigues’ career and influence will be on view.

Rodrigues’ designs are widely regarded as “ambassadors of Brazilian culture” in far-flung outposts such as the Brazilian Embassy in Rome. Oscar Niemeyer chose Rodrigues’ work for many of the interiors of Brasilia; and a direct relationship exists between the geometries of Rodrigues’ Oscar Chair of 1956 and some of Niemeyer’s subsequent architectural signatures.

Sergio Rodrigues will be present at the exhibition opening on September 29th, 2004.
