R & Company is pleased to collaborate with Manitoga / The Russel Wright Design Center to present a selection of works by acclaimed ceramic artist Hun Chung Lee in dialogue with the unique environments designed by Mary and Russel Wright.
Manitoga—the Wrights’ house, studio, and woodland garden—is a National Historic Landmark and one of the few twentieth-century modern homes in New York State open to the public. More than eighty years after its creation, the site continues to provide an inspiring context for presenting new creative voices, offering visitors a meaningful encounter with art in a sensitively designed setting.
For this exhibition, R & Company presents indoor and outdoor sculptural furniture and objects made by Hun Chung Lee in his studios in Los Angeles and Seoul, South Korea. Lee’s approach requires deep engagement with his materials and process. He hand-sculpts each piece and paints layers of glaze over several days, drawing on expertise honed over 30 years while embracing the process’s mystery and surprise. Lee is often inspired by nature, which he evokes through delicate color palettes and organic forms. In some instances, he seamlessly incorporates concrete and steel into his works, making these “cold materials” appear softer while adding depth and texture to his sculptural objects.
