New York gallerist Alexander Milliken, who represented Wendell Castle in the 1980s, commissioned the artist to design carved paneling for his Soho loft, to which he responded by creating the present work. Castle considered the panel’s decorative scheme to be part of his Dr. Caligari series, inspired by Hermann Warm’s set designs for the classic 1920 horror film. -
