Korean mother-of-pearl lacquerware generally features iridescent figures, forms, and landscapes floating on a striking dark ground. For her “Mermaid Bench”, Kang reimagines this centuries-old compositional tradition, floating a seat of mother of pearl atop a pitch-black base.
